He works at the most fashionable club as a second level customer check pointsman and has regular confrontations with his boss's ponytail. Des (Eigeman) is the only one with a half cool job. It is the early 80s and some of the guys are into careers and witty wordplay, although marriage is still not an option. Naturally, they attract the Harvard grads, because Stillman knows about them, being one himself. The only vaguely new slant is that Alice (Chloe Sevigny) catches herpes and Eigeman has a coke habit.Īlice and Charlotte (an impressive Kate Beckinsale) decide to share a "railway apartment" (narrow, with all rooms leading off each other) so they can embark on "more group socialising." They don't particularly like each other - Charlotte is one of those charm bitches, who can't help slagging off her friends behind their backs - although enjoys going out at night to the disco clubs and braving the queues and slipping past the management. What once was fresh, now is stale - the same humour, the same conversations, the same suits-and-ties, the same Chris Eigeman (he of the startled eyes), the same intonation, the same been-there-blown-that attitude. Although billed as the third in a trilogy, the fact is Stillman's stuck in a groove.

When not exercising debating skills on the subversive nature of The Lady And The Tramp, they discuss the social implications of "yuppie scum" and whether it's a bad thing.įirst there was Metropolitan (debs and escorts in Manhattan), then Barcelona (same crowd in Europe) and now The Last Days Of Disco (Hampshire college girls in NY clubland). Or what? They have jobs in publishing and the law and advertising. They have relationships with each other and then not.

It's WASPish chattering class comic cuts, with preppy overtones, where a group of friends, who have probably been to school together, talk of books and breasts and being bored. It's not David Mamet, because nothing much happens and no one swears. It's not Woody Allen, although articulate and dry. He got into the film business working on Spanish films in the 1980s.Whit Stillman makes a certain kind of movie. His first jobs were at New York’s the Village Voice and Doubleday publishing. He graduated from Harvard College where he was an editor of the Harvard Crimson. He has turned two of his films into novels: “The Last Days of Disco, With Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards,” winner of France’s Prix Fitzgerald, and most recently, “Love & Friendship – In Which Jane Austen’s Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated.” He has also written and directed the pilot of a European set television series, “The Cosmopolitans.” Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up there and in New York’s Hudson Valley. Whit Stillman has written and directed five films, including “Damsels in Distress,” “Barcelona,” and “Metropolitan,” which was nominated for the 1991 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Stillman’s erudite use of language, humor, and character development turns The Last Days of Disco into one of the most venerable and celebrated pictures of the past 20 years.ĭir: Whit Stillman / 1998 / US / 113 min WHIT STILLMAN Director Whit Stillman’s film follows the impatiently practical Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and the reticent Alice (Chloë Sevigny) as they dive into the kaleidoscopic, expectant, and glitter-flecked dance scene of 1980s Manhattan. The Last Days of Disco bridges the carbonated euphoria of music with the barbed malaise of social postulations.
